Larry Smith serves as Commissioner of the Board of Ingham County Road Commissioners.  The Ingham County Road Commission is responsible for the repair, maintenance and traffic safety of more than 1,249 miles of road throughout Ingham County.  The Board of Ingham County Road Commissioners directs a $22 million-plus annual road maintenance and construction budget, and supervises a staff of over 90 full-time employees.
    Smith is the Manager of Labor Community Relations with the Sparrow Health System, a position he has held since 1995.  Smith is responsible for establishing effective lines of communication and maintaining working relationships with labor leaders and union members who may utilize or influence the purchase of Sparrow Health System services.
    Prior to assuming his current position at Sparrow, Smith served as the President of the Michigan State University  AFSCME Labor Union Local 1585.  While President, Smith supervised a variety of issues for the union including medical benefits, workers compensation, long-term disability, employee assistance, safety and contract administration.  Smith began work at MSU as a research animal caretaker in 1967.
    In addition to his various labor positions at Michigan State University, Smith serves on a variety of committees and philanthrophic organizations in the Greater Lansing area.  He served as Vice-President of both the AFSCME International Executive Board and the AFSCME Council 25 executive Board where his duties included supervising budgets and direction policies and procedures for the labor council.
    Larry Smith served as Chair of the Administrative and Personnel Committee for the Community Mental Health Board for Clinton, Eaton and Ingham Counties.  He also served as Chair of the Capital Area United Way.
    Smith was awarded the Capital Area United Way Walter Campbell Volunteer of the Year for 1998.  He has also received the AFSCME Council 25 Martin Luther King Jr. Award, the Right-to-Know Task Force Achievement Award and was a recipient of the MSU Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award
    Smith graduated with a Bachelors degree in Communication from Michigan State University.
